Julie & Alan’s Wedding at Ellingham Hall was to be our last wedding in 2018. It was a venue that had eluded us in recent years. We were so lucky that our first visit would be before Christmas for a Winter wedding.
Halo Photography had a fun history with Julie. We first met her years earlier when she joined her workmate’s training for a Moonwalk. We did a promotional photoshoot with her in a very creatively decorated bra all ready for this sponsored walk. We’ve since photographed charity nights & family for Julie. We hope that relationship was the reason that she choose us to document her Wedding Day.
Ellingham Hall, Christmas Wonderland
Ellingham Hall is beautiful at any time of year, but add their Christmas decorations and it’s breathtaking. On arriving it was hard to not go down the rabbit hole and over dose on “detail shots”. The only thing that was missing was snow on the ground to complete a
Despite it being the middle of December we had blue skies but it was cold. Because of this, we knew our time outside with guests would be limited. Ellingham Hall is a great venue for this though as the reception rooms are on the front of the grounds so you don’t have to walk miles to find guests. This is a big thumbs up for us.

Groom Prep
There’s always one thing that nearly scuppers a wedding. For Julie & Alan, it was their Best Man going to the wrong venue that morning. Luckily he realised his mistake with loads of time to spare. While the girls were enjoying a spaciously beautiful room to get ready in, Alan made do with his Best Man’s suite. A lovely over-night room, but not a lot of room to move around. We quickly met with Alan’s brother in the reception room.

A Winter Wedding at Ellingham Hall
It was only 5 degrees celsius in the sunshine so everyone was really brave to venture outside. As fabulous as the interior of Ellingham Hall is, all of the spaces big enough to fit everyone in were being used. Just had to let people warm up inside between each group to prevent them from turning blue. We still had great fun though keeping warm through giggle power. Julie was a real trooper. Bare arms at this time of year can be brutal. We loved this Winter Wedding
We didn’t venture far from the entrance. When the cold got too much we nipped back in do any smaller group that had been requested and some of our fabulous couple.
Winter Wedding in December
It was a real shame we couldn’t explore the grounds more. It was impractical without gloves and a parka and Julie had forgotten her long-johns!
Ellingham Hall’s History
Ellingham Hall in Northumberland was built in the 17th century by Sir John Haggerston but stands on the site of a much older structure. It has secret priest tunnels and chambers. It was farmed by the Women’s Land Army and was a boys school for over 30 years. After 8 years of refurbishment, it reopened in 2003 as a venue for holiday rental, parties, weddings and corporate events. The chapel makes a wonderful function room and its hard to believe that it was gutted by fire in 2010.
We left Alan & Julie as they sat down for their wedding breakfast. It had been a lovely day and we pinched them for one last time for a winter sunset on their first day of married life. We wish them a wonderful life together and hope that they enjoy their wedding photography for years to come.
