Halo Photography, Our Story

Where do we start? No one ever reads these and I’ve had a few glasses of wine so let’s have fun.

As babies, Lisa & Mark always carried a Canon Camera. Don’t be silly, that’s ridiculous… or is it? Seriously though, neither of us fancied a proper job or wanted to make any money so (obviously), we chose to be photographers. Not just any photographers though, we wanted to be the best around this neck of the woods!

After college, we returned home to the North East & landed jobs with the nations largest portrait firm which is where we met. It was hard work but great fun and we loved the staff we worked with, cementing our love of photographing families & kids.

We also learn’t two valuable lessons… don’t squeeze 50 family shoots into one day and don’t borrow large sums of money before a banking collapse! After 10 wonderful years, the rug was pulled out from under us in 2006, just a few days before Christmas. The company was one of the first victims of the recession. After much soul searching and wandering through the wilderness, we decided to team up, power ranger style, and start Halo Photography in September 2007.

One small problem, we were skint. So skint that we used our, own, child labour to paint what would be our studio. With family help, we turned an old bathroom showroom into a photography studio. We don’t think of ourselves as eco-warriors but everything constructed in the studio is reclaimed, recycled or stolen. (Only joking about the stolen, honest constable). We hoped this glorious shed in the back end of beyond would maybe make us a few quid before that Christmas so we could by our kids an orange each.

17 years later we’ve kept the dream alive through recession and pandemic. Adding rooms and services throughout the years. Our tin shed now boasts a photo studio (obviously), private presentation room (posh for “where you cry at your lush photos”), a makeup station and changing room, offices, kitchen, baby changing & indoor bog. (We’re proud of our toilet because, as old school customers will remember we used to have to escort peeps to an outside loo!). Our most recent addition being air conditioning so we are warm and toasty.

We have the most amazing customers and feel we have the best job in the world. Even when getting soaked at a wedding or wee’d on by a newborn baby. Being creative and doing something we love for a living makes us feel extremely lucky. Knowing that our work is in thousands of home around the North East.

who we are and what we're about

Lisa

Lisa is a photographer, makeup artist and sales consultant. A selfie loving show off and the gob of the company. Mark often has to rescue customers whose ears have fallen off from listening to her exploits.

5ft 4, Mother of one 6ft 4 young man. Disney nut, truck mad and permanently manic, Lisa is the life & soul of any party.

Lisa runs most of our wedding planning, family & baby sessions at Halo Photography.

Mark

Mark is a photographer, photo editor and everything else. Lisa normally keeps him locked in a cupboard so he doesn’t scare the customers but he generally makes sure everything works. Dad of 2 girls that are growing up far too fast.

Lisa does of course let him out for photo shoot sessions & weddings, allowing her to direct & pose clients and accepts that he will never out shine Lisa’s limelight. Growing a grey hair for each working day.

Mark runs most of our commercial photo shoots.
